Mrs. Luther “Nell” Collins, 95, a lifelong resident of Winder, Georgia died in a Rome, Georgia hospital on January 8, 2026. Nell moved to a Rome Assisted living facility two years ago to be near family.
Nell outlived so many of her loved ones. She had numerous brothers and sisters who have passed on, as well as her husband of 66 years, Ernest Collins. Over the years she laid to rest three of her four children, Janice, Joe, and Jerry Collins. Her surviving son, Dr. James Collins and his wife Pat, live in Rome, Georgia. Also in Rome is her granddaughter, Nicole Collins and her husband Shane Rehberg. Her grandson, Jim Collins is also of Rome.
Nell was a hardworking helpmate to her husband in several family businesses over the years. She helped run a cafe, a convenience store, a car dealership, and real estate rental units. Nell loved to travel, shop, cook, and play various games of chance. She welcomed many people into her home with a very fine meal. She took great enjoyment with her son’s rock and roll band, “The Genteels”. They practiced in her basement for years. She loved the music and she loved to dance.
Nell loved to “have company”. Her house was frequently overflowing. She frequently had lots of people gathered around her table on holidays bragging about her good cooking.
Nell had great love and pride in her family. There were family photos all over the house, as well as in her wallet. Besides her love for family, she adored her pets. She always had a dog, which she called “her baby”. It wasn’t unusual for her to cook a burger or piece of fried chicken to make the “baby” happy.
Nell’s memorial service will be private. The family requests no flowers, but if a contribution is desired, please send it to The American Cancer Society. As a cancer survivor, that would make her happy. (Donate here !)
